Rosewood Amsterdam: A Detailed Look at the City’s Most Anticipated Luxury Hotel

September 3, 2023

Amsterdam’s hospitality landscape has been transformed with the opening of Rosewood Amsterdam, a hotel that redefines luxury in the heart of the city. Housed in the historic former Palace of Justice—an architectural gem dating back to 1665—this property is the result of a decade-long restoration and is the last new hotel development permitted in a monumental building within Amsterdam’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed canal district.

A Landmark Restoration

The transformation of the Palace of Justice into Rosewood Amsterdam was a meticulous ten-year project, led by Studio Piet Boon for interiors and landscape architect Piet Oudolf for the gardens. The restoration preserved original features such as cellblocks, courtrooms, and grand staircases, blending them with contemporary Dutch design and craftsmanship. The ethos was to create a gesamtkunstwerk—a “total work of art”—where service, art, culture, retail, and design are seamlessly integrated.

The hotel now features:

  • 134 elegantly appointed guest rooms and suites, including five signature Houses, each inspired by Amsterdam’s artistic and architectural traditions.
  • Interiors that showcase Dutch craftsmanship, with bespoke furnishings, coffered ceilings, pillars, and a palette inspired by Dutch masters—deep woods, metallics, ruby reds, and sapphire blues.
  • Over 1,000 curated artworks, many by local artists, displayed throughout the property.
  • Public spaces and rooms that combine the grandeur of the 17th century with modern comfort and style.

Dining & Social Spaces

Rosewood Amsterdam offers three distinctive restaurants and bars, each with its own character and culinary philosophy:

  • Eeuwen: A flagship restaurant led by Chef David Ordóñez, celebrating Dutch ingredients with a seasonal, slow-dining approach.
  • Advocatuur Bar: Nods to the building’s legal past with innovative cocktails and a speakeasy-style distillery, including Provo—a modern take on Dutch Jenever.
  • The Court: A stylish lobby lounge for morning pastries and coffee or evening gatherings.

The hotel’s venues are united by the Dutch concept of gezelligheid—a welcoming, cozy atmosphere that invites guests to linger and connect.

Wellness, Events, and Experiences

  • Asaya® Spa: The first of its kind in the Netherlands, offering holistic wellness treatments, a 12-meter indoor pool, and a state-of-the-art gym with pilates and barre classes.
  • Gardens by Piet Oudolf: Guests can enjoy guided walks through lush, seasonal gardens, providing a tranquil retreat in the heart of the city.
  • Ballroom & Events: A 2,400-square-foot (223-square-meter) ballroom and several event spaces cater to weddings, conferences, and private gatherings.
  • Curated Experiences: Private canal journeys aboard a custom Salon Boat styled by Studio Piet Boon and culinary workshops that highlight local flavors.

Cultural Significance & Philosophy

Rosewood Amsterdam is not just a hotel—it’s a cultural institution that honors the city’s past while embracing its vibrant future. The hotel’s leadership emphasizes purpose-led luxury, circular hospitality, and collaboration with local partners. The property is designed as a creative hub, showcasing global digital art, local talent, and immersive cultural programming.

Managing Director Thomas Harlander describes the mission:

“Our mission is to craft an experience where Amsterdam’s rich history and culture intertwine with Rosewood’s distinctive lifestyle… It’s a celebration of heritage, innovation, and meaningful connections.”
